Ibu Jamu

Since before moving here I have been interested in learning about nutrition, natural herbs and medicines, also natural beauty products...etc. Living here has been a cool opportunity to learn about natural medicine because the culture still really values the use of traditional medicine. There is a traditional medicine here called jamu. There are many different types of jamu... Mikaela and I both have been starting to get more into learning about jamu and other traditional medicines here.

Jamu is usually sold by a woman (Ibu Jamu) who walks around different neighborhoods carrying a large basket of bottles on her back. These bottles contain the various concoctions she uses to make the medicine. If you know the name of the jamu you want you can ask her to make it for you and you drink it right there out of the glass she provides. If you don't know which jamu would be best, you can just explain your symptoms to her or your desired effect from drinking and she will provide you with the drink she thinks is best. Some people drink jamu every day for various reasons. The cost is about 30 cents per glass on our island, but on other islands can be as cheap as 10 cents.

The jamu I like to drink is called kunyit asam and is made from primarily turmeric and tamarind. The claimed benefits are: clear/youthful skin, stronger immune system, relief from fatigue, and detoxification.

I also really love tolak angin which is made from honey and ginger to help relief cough and flu symptoms. This one can be made fresh by Ibu Jamu or bought in the store in a little packet.

(*Just a note- :) Jamu is made from boiling herbs and roots such as ginger, turmeric, tamarind, lemon grass...etc. and has nothing to do with potions or magic spells.)
