Teaching in the Ruli
The last two months I have been teaching english to children in the ruli. (The word "ruli" is used to describe the neighborhoods of the poorest people in town whose homes are made of scraps. There is no running water and the electricity only runs from 6pm to 6am. Ironically this ruli is called Kampung Air, which means "water village", I suppose due to the two wells that have been dug at the bottom of the village for bathing, cooking, and washing dishes/clothes.) My friend, Dian, and I have opened a free english school in the ruli for the children to come learn english so they can have more opportunities for their future. Dian's lease on her apartment was just ending so she decided she would like to live in the ruli to help get the school running.
